Guilherme adopted the name "Roberto" in honor of his idol, singer Roberto Carlos. In 1952, at 14 years old, Roberto Guilherme went on to play soccer professionally, as a left winger for Vasco da Gama. After writing and acting in an amateur theater play performed in Olaria Atlético Clube, Renato was invited to work at TV Rio. In 1963, he started working at TV Excelsior, where he met Renato Aragão, with whom he became great friends and with whom he began a long partnership on television.

In 1966, he played for the first time his famous character, the bad-tempered Sergeant Pincel, on the program "O Quartel do Barulho" from RecordTV. From then on, he acted alongside Aragão and Dedé Santana in several programs, such as "Os Adoráveis Trapalhões", "A Praça da Alegria", and "Os Insociáveis". In 1982 he went to Rede Globo, where he joined the cast of "Os Trapalhões", having remained in the comedy until its definitive end in 1995, being considered by fans a 'fifth' trapalhão. There Renato played several characters, but his most remembered character became Sergeant Pincel, who tried to bring order to the barracks and was irritated by the antics of Didi, by whom he was always ironized. Later, he would return to play the character in "Os Trapalhões em Portugal", "A Turma do Didi", and "As Aventuras do Didi". The identification with this character is such that, in an interview, he stated that his own family called him "Pinça", short for Pincel.

After the end of the Aragão programs, Guilherme continued to act in comedy shows on Globo and Multishow, such as "Zorra" and "Treme Treme". In 2018, he played General Armando in the sitcom "Dra.
