Rainbow is a Spanish alternate Oz movie released onto Netflix on September 30, 2022. It makes various allusions to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and was originally filmed in Spanish but has English among other language voiceovers and is rated TV-Mature.
The storyline revolves around Dora, a modern version of Dorothy Gale who is in search of her missing mother. She meets human characters inspired by the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman besides an actual Cowardly Lion that appears as sort of a symbolic hallucination or perhaps ghost that only she can see. It takes place on Earth in a way similar to 20th Century Oz with a sign on the bakery noting that it’s located in the “Isle de Oz”.
The only “magical element” is caused by a shared drug trip related to a hallucinogenic spray bottle. The characters see a Yellow Brick Road and even an uncredited Michael Jackson impersonator sitting atop a flying manta ray. There are otherwise some moments that can be described as magic realism such as characters spontaneously dancing to music.
Filming finished on October 21st, 2021 as directed by Paco León who also wrote the screenplay along with Javier Gullón. It was filmed around various locations in Spain including Madrid, Segovia, Guadalajara, Toledo, and Alicante,

On her 16th birthday, Dora finds out that her papi José told lies about her mother’s absence and storms out of the house holding Toto while a distant tornado is behind her. She realizes that her mother seemingly gave her up via an adoption agreement and has only visited at least once when Dora was 12 without revealing her true identity. Dora learns that her mother used to work for a prominent fashion company owned by the second richest man in the country named Arturo and walks up to his house to inquire about her. Seeing that the door is open, she walks in and explains her intrusion to the occupants upstairs. These include his wife Coco and her business partner Maribel.
Right before Arturo passes away after apparently being in a coma, Maribel reveals that she is Dora’s grandmother. Coco’s niece Lilith (unnamed in film) brings Dora to her room once Arturo’s heart stops. She tells Dora that her mother’s name is Pilar and that she used to help around the house by watching Lilith and her cousin. She hands her a trinket for a business called the Poppy Field located in Capital City explaining that it was the last place she heard that Pilar was working at. She lastly gives her a pair of silver sequined pump shoes.
Meanwhile in the other room, Coco is having a breakdown and angrily yells at Maribel anas she threatens to shoot herself with a pistol. Maribel insists that it isn’t loaded which causes Coco to aim it at her as Dora rushes in and tries to grab hold of the gun in Coco’s hand causing it to misfire. The bullet hits Arturo’s head as Maribel explains to the lawyer Félix and his assistant who then walk in that he was already dead before the accidental discharge. Coco tries to place blame on Dora and claims that she is a murderer but the others in the room don’t believe her. Lilith tilts her head suggesting that Dora should leave, so she runs outside.
