Ragbad is a small independent kingdom in the southeastern corner of Quadling Country, overlooking Jinxland. It appears in Ruth Plumly Thompson's Grampa in Oz.
History[]
Ragbad was a stronger nation in the past. Its gardens were once where all of Oz's finest garments were grown. It had been famous for its chintz and tapis trees, its red ginghams and calico vines, its cotton fields and its fine linens and lawns. However, when King Fumbo came to the throne, he emptied the royal treasury in order to purchase books and tobacco (evidently sometime before Oz banished money) and bankrupted the nation. Soon nearly the entire population of the kingdom emigrated to escape poverty, leaving a population of only 27 people left. The gardens and crops all died, leaving those left to turn to picking rags to subsist on. The country only gets by through trading rags. The garments worn in the kingdom are rags sewn together by Ms. Sew-and-Sew.
One day during a storm King Fumbo lost his head, and it was up to Prince Tatters and Ragbad's bravest soldier Grampa to find it. They found the head, and along the journey Tatters found a lover in the form of the fairy Urtha, later revealed to be the lost princess of Perhaps City, Pretty Good. Their marriage helps bring wealth back to Ragbad and cure their economic woes.
