O Mágico di Ó, subtitled O Clássico em Forma de Cordel, is a Brazilian musical theater inspired by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book by L. Frank Baum. The play was idealized by Luiza Porto and Vitor Rocha, written by playwright Vitor Rocha, and directed by Ivan Parente and Daniela Stirbulov.
The play proposes a journey through the culture of the Brazilian Northeast with the adventures of Dorotéia, Mamulengo, Cabra-de-Lata, and Leão (a Brazilianized version of Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, respectively) along the brick road. The actors, who are also the play's band, use different rhythms and verses to access the ludic and invite the audience to experience this universe. The text goes through several important writers who founded literature until arriving at cordel literature and woodcuts. The original songs range from frevo to xote and from cantiga to lamento, paraphrasing the famous phrase "there is no place like home", a motto that plays with the lost hope of a people in retreat.[4]
Synopsis[]
O Mágico Di Ó – O Clássico em Forma de Cordel tells the story of the girl Dorotéia and her piblings boarding a pau de arara, heading to the capital of São Paulo in search of a better life, fleeing a land without rain and without hope. Among this group of migrants is the cordel and verse writer Osvaldo, who begins to tell a story to entertain his fellow travelers. The verses, based on a true story, give wings to the girl's imagination, mixing reality and fantasy in this fun plot, which has as its protagonist Dorotéia who wants to bring rain to her land and see a rainbow cross the Cariri. The long journey in search of a powerful magician reframes motivations and questions by exploring various forms of expression such as dance, music, theater and literature.[4]

Film adaptation[]
On October 5, 2019, it was announced that director Pedro Vasconcelos, during a session of Vitor Rocha's musical at the João Caetano Theater, decided to adapt it for the cinema. Filming took place from October 15, 2019 to November 5, 2019, in Cabaceiras, Paraíba, the city known as the "Roliúde Nordestina" (Northeastern Hollywood), for having served as the setting for countless films and series, the most famous being "O Auto da Compadecida" (A Dog's Will).[5][6] Between the end of October and the beginning of November 2019, the last takes of the film were made, at Theatro Municipal and Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo. Recordings were also made at the end of January 2020, in the last session of the play's season, at Teatro Anchieta - Sesc Consolação. O Mágico Di Ó was scheduled to be released in the second half of 2020.[7][6] However, with the closure of movie theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its premiere was postponed and in December 2020 the film was in post-production.[8][6] In an interview, director Pedro Vasconcelos mentioned possible online releases and the return of movie theaters.[9][6]
