Percy and Dorothy Imprisoned

Monday Mountain is a location in Winkie Country, and appears in Ruth Plumly Thompson's Grampa in Oz.

Captured at Monday Mountain[]

On Monday Mountain it is always wash day, and every meal is cabbage and potatoes. It is populated by the Tubbies, an all-female Queendom made of homely laundresses and wash maidens. Dorothy Gale was journeying with Percy Vere, the Forgetful Poet, in search of the princess Pretty Good of Perhaps City, when the two of them were unlucky enough to climb Monday Mountain. The Queen of the Tubbies was going to wash their faces, iron their hands and wring their necks for trespassing, but the princess of the Tubbies, Pearl Borax, took a liking to Percy and wanted to marry him. Percy refused, and he and Dorothy were imprisoned on the mountain for two full days, forced to do laundry the entire time. A white fence (literally) runs across the mountain, trapping anyone imprisoned there, but it will stop running if you tell it to stop. Dorothy figures this out, and makes a quick escape with Percy.

Notes[]

In the days before washing machines it was customary in the United States and other countries to take care of laundry on Mondays, which is what Thompson was referencing in this anecdote.
