Larry Semon (February 9, 1889 October 8, 1928) was a director and actor who directed The Wizard of Oz (1925) and co-starred as the Scarecrow with his second wife Dorothy Dwan. His passing at only the age of 39 was speculated by Variety Magazine to have been c
onnected to the movie in that:

This screen disaster caused Mr. Semon no end of worry and repeated efforts to recoup only added to his discomfiture. Last March he filed a voluntary petition in bankruptcy, listing debts at nearly $500,000. Ceaseless worry undermined his health making him an easy victim of pneumonia.

Despite this claim, he was involved with about 10 other films before his death.
