José Dumont (pronounced: joe-ZEH doo-MON-tea) is a Brazilian television, film, and theater actor. In the 1984 Brazilian parody film Os Trapalhões e o Mágico de Oróz, Dumont played Tatu.

Biography[]

Born to Severino do Monte in the city of Bananeiras in the state of Paraíba, José had the French name “Dumont” due to a registry error. Being from a poor family, he did not attend school; however, he learned to read with cordel literature, which was common in the Northeast Region of Brazil. He began his artistic career in cinema in 1977 as Severino in “Morte e Vida Severina”, interestingly it was also his first work on television in the work of the same name on Rede Globo. José won his first award in 1979, the Prêmio APCA de Televisão for the best male revelation category for his role in the TV series “Plantão de Polícia”. In 1980, he won his first award on the big screen when he played Ceará in “Gaijin – Os Caminhos da Liberdade”, earning him the Kikito de Ouro award for the best supporting actor category at the Festival de Gramado. In the same year, he won the Festival de Cinema de Brasília’s best actor award for the film “O Homem que Virou Suco”.

In 1985, he played Cróvis and Peixoto in the telenovela “De Quina Pra Lua” and was Zé Bebelo in the miniseries “Veredas”. Two years later, he moved to Rede Manchete playing Aluísio in “Carmem” and, the following year, as Delegado Eurípedes Peçanha in “Olho por Olho”. He began the 1990s, playing Gil in “Pantanal”, Antenor in “Rosa dos Rumos”, and Mané Coxó in “A História de Ana Raio e Zé Trovão”.

In 1991, he played Raimundo in the miniseries "Amazônia". Two years later, he was Penteado in the soap opera "Guerra sem Fim". In 1995, he played Né Cachorrão in "Tocaia Grande" and later ended his work on Rede Manchete as Terto in "Mandacaru". In 1998, Dumont would be recognized in cinema again in the feature film “Kenoma”, giving life to Lineu, being recognized by two awards: Best Actor at the Festival de Brasília and Best Supporting Actor at the Festival do Cinema Brasileiro de Miami. In 2003, he was voted best in his main category by Cine PE, when playing Antônio Biá in the film “Narradores de Javé”. Three years later, he became Best Supporting Actor at the Grande Prêmio Brasileiro de Cinema in the role of Miranda in “2 Filhos de Francisco”. In 1999, he returned to Rede Globo as Batista in “Terra Nostra”.

In 2005, he was the lifeguard Bóia in the soap opera “América”. The following year, he transferred to RecordTV, giving life to Alcides in the first phase of “Cidadão Brasileiro”. In 2007, he participated in the soap operas “Luz do Sol” as Fausto and “Caminhos do Coração” as Teófilo. He later returned to play the character Teófilo in “Os Mutantes: Caminhos do Coração”, the second part of the trilogy.

In 2010, he played Romeu in the soap opera "Ribeirão do Tempo". Two years later, he played Moacir in the series "Fora de Controle" and in the special "O Milagre dos Pássaros" as captain Lindolfo Ezequiel. In 2013, he was Esmeraldino in "Dona Xepa", concluding his work at RecordTV as Job in "Milagres de Jesus".

In 2015, he returned to Rede Globo as Expedito in the telenovela "I Love Paraisópolis". The following year, he was Zé Pirangueiro in "Velho Chico". In 2017, he participated in the series "Sob Pressão" as Valdo Cruz; in addition to playing the characters Tião das Cacimbas and Sílvio in the works “Onde Nascem os Fortes” and “Segunda Chamada”, respectively. In 2020, he gave life to Coronel Eudoro in “Nos Tempos do Imperador”.
