José Jofre Soares, or simply Jofre Soares (pronounced: JOE-free soh-AH-rees), was a Brazilian actor and nautical officer, considered one of the great names in Brazilian national cinema. He played the role of a judge in the 1984 Brazilian parody film Os Trapalhões e o Mágico de Oróz.

Biography[]

Born in Palmeira dos Índios, Alagoas, Jofre Soares was a navy officer for 25 years, a career he shared with theater and circus shows, where he was a clown. His film debut was when filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos met him and invited him to act in the 1968 film "Vidas Secas", based on Graciliano Ramos' homonym novel.

After that, Jofre Soares acted in more than one hundred films, including the 1972 film "A Faca e o Rio" by George Sluizer, where he won the Coruja de Ouro award for best actor, the 1975 film "Guerra Conjugal" by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, where he won the Prêmio Air France and Coruja de Ouro awards for best actor, and the 1975 film "O Predileto" by Roberto Palmari, where he won the Kikito award for best actor. His last performance in cinema was in the 1997 film "O Cangaceiro" by Anibal Massaini, where he posthumously played the role of a sertanejo called Tico Velho.
