Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is the 4th book in L. Frank Baum's Oz books series.
Baum dedicated it to his sister, Harriet Alvena Baum Neal.
Plot[]
On her way back from Australia, Dorothy Gale meets her cousin, Zeb Hugson, in San Francisco. They are swallowed up by an earthquake, along with his horse, Jim, and her cat, Eureka, and eventually come down in the Land of the Mangaboos- a kingdom constructed from stained glass inhabited by the Mangaboos, who are vegetable people. The Wizard of Oz also arrives there in his balloon. They are collectively blamed for the earthquake, which damaged many of the buildings, and are threatened with execution.
The Wizard impresses the Mangaboos with an illusion involving his Nine Tiny Piglets and defeats their sorcerer, Gwig, in the hopes of saving the party. The current ruler will be replanted when the new one is "picked," so in the hopes of better treatment, the party "picks" her (a plot point recycled in the Rose Kingdom in The Tik-Tok Man of Oz/Tik-Tok of Oz). The new ruler is not much more sympathetic, and they narrowly escape through a tunnel.
They take a subterranean journey through the Valley of Voe (which is rife with invisible bears), are briefly imprisoned by the Gargoyles in the all-wooden Land of Naught, meet the solitary Braided Man, and encounter a cavern full of Dragonettes. Eventually, they come to a dead-end cavern, so Ozma uses the Magic Belt to bring them to the Land of Oz.
In the Emerald City, Jim suffers a blow to his ego when he loses a race against the Sawhorse, and when one of the Wizard's Piglets goes missing, Eureka is put on trial. Eventually, the Wizard is invited to stay in Oz as a regular citizen, but Dorothy, Zeb, and their animals decide to return home.

Trivia[]
- Grace Duffie Boylan's 1909 children's novel Yama Yama Land seems to reuse various concepts from this book and is considered an Oz imitation.
- Part of the book is known to have been adapted for the lost 1910 silent film Dorothy and the Scarecrow in Oz.
- A low-budget film version was almost made in the 1950s by Lippert Pictures that had somehow bought the rights from the Baum estate. It sold them to Walt Disney Pictures for a large sum as they wanted to remove any competition from their own albeit canceled project Rainbow Road to Oz.
