Daniel is the name of all of Billina's male offspring. As chicks they were assumed to be female and originally all named Dorothy after Billina's friend Dorothy Gale. When they turned out to be "horrid roosters," their names were changed to Daniel, so they could keep their engraved gold lockets. (The Emerald City of Oz)
