Between 1994 and 2000, two independent comic book companies based in Michigan named Caliber Comics and Arrow Comics collaborated on a couple series of interconnected alternate Oz comics. Caliber published 21 issues of Oz while a five part miniseries entitled Dark Oz and nine issues of The Land of Oz.
The concept was created by Ralph Griffin with art done by Bill Bunyan.
In 2008 there were rumors that a movie was in development based only on the Dark Oz series but presumably this was canceled. The miniseries was adapted into a novel by Aaron Denenberg that was intended to be the first in a trilogy with the title Dark Oz, Book 1: Of Courage and Witchcraft.
In 2017, re-releases of the first and second collections was published.
