Butchcellbound

Butch in "Cellbound" (1955).

Butch is an anthropomorphic bulldog with an Irish accent, created by Tex Avery for MGM in 1949. He was originally named Spike, but this name was later reassigned to a less anthropomorphic bulldog, with a New York or New England accent, who often menaces Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse.

The Irish dog was a recurring antagonist in the Droopy shorts, and appeared in his own series of solo shorts as well, until 1958. Butch was reintroduced in Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring (2002), where he was conflated with Spike. In The Tom and Jerry Show (2014), Butch and Spike were retconned as brothers.

Butch is voiced by Joe Alaskey in Tom and Jerry & the Wizard of Oz and Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz.

Oz-related biography[]

Butchwinkie

Butch was a quasi-anthropomorphic dog from Kansas, who got sucked up by the same tornado as Dorothy Gale, Toto, Tom Cat, and Jerry Mouse. Butch got a job alongside his pal Droopy as mercenary guards for the Wicked Witch of the West, alongside the Winkies. Butch was not a very good guard, and easily got clobbered and his place taken by Tom, who had infiltrated the Witch's castle. The dogs left the castle after Dorothy destroyed the Witch. Butch was content to stay in Oz, and never sought to return to Kansas. (Tom and Jerry & the Wizard of Oz).

Butch and Droopy eventually took employment with King Ruggedo of the Nomes. Butch was a well-intentioned minion, constantly giving good advice to Ruggedo, but rarely receiving any royal gratitude. The two dogs quit Ruggedo's service when ordered to toss Dorothy and the Scarecrow into a pit full of sharp stones. They later placed themselves before the mercy of Oz the Great and Powerful, who gave them jobs as stablehands for the Horse of a Different Color. (Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz)

Background[]

Butch's role in the second movie is similar to Kaliko's character arc in L. Frank Baum's Oz books.
