Traveling through the Black Pit
The Black Pit is a cave in the mountains of the Land of the Mangaboos and is used by the Mangaboos to dispose of unwelcome guests.
The mountain is a rugged, towering chunk of deep green glass, and the cave is actually a tunnel which leads upward through the mountain and into the Valley of Voe. (Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz)

In the illustration of the Black Pit by John R. Neill there are small creatures shown all throughout the cave. Their race and purpose is unknown since they never appear again.
