"Believe in Yourself", also known as "If You Believe", is a song from The Wiz. In the play, the Wiz sings the song to the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion before giving them their rewards for killing Evillene. Later on near the end, Glinda appears and sings a reprise to Dorothy, in order to tell her how to use the Silver Shoes return to Kansas. This version serves as a replacement for the quotes "All you have to do is to knock the heels together three times and command the shoes to carry you wherever you wish to go," from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and, "Then, close your eyes, tap your heels together three times, and think to yourself, There's no place like home. There's no place like home," from The Wizard of Oz.

In the movie The Wiz, Dorothy (Diana Ross) sings the first version, instead of the Wiz (Richard Pryor). In The Wiz Live!, Glinda was the only one to sing.

"Believe in Yourself" Lyrics[]

The Wizard[]

  • If you believe
  • Within your heart you'll know
  • That no one can change
  • The path that you must go
  • Believe what you feel
  • And know you're right because
  • The time will come around
  • When you'll say it's yours
  • Believe there's a reason to be
  • Believe you can make time stand still
  • And know from the moment you try
  • If you believe, l know you will
  • Believe in yourself
  • Right form the start
  • And you will have brains
  • And you'll have a heart
  • And you will have courage
  • To last you your whole life through
  • If you believe in yourself
  • If you believe in yourself, you believe in yourself
  • Maybe you can believe in me too !

Glinda[]

  • If you believe
  • Within your heart you'll know
  • That no one can change
  • The path that you must go
  • Believe what you feel
  • And know you're right because
  • The time will come around
  • When you'll say it's yours
  • Believe that you can go home
  • Believe you can float on air
  • Then click your heels three times
  • If you believe, then you'll be there
  • Believe in yourself right from the start
  • Believe in the magic that's inside your heart
  • Believe all these things
  • Not because I told you to
  • But believe in yourself
  • If you believe in yourself
  • Just believe in yourself
  • As I believe in you !
